Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand

Where to Wander. (Interesting sites)
Activity Operators. (Who to go to)

There are fish to catch and shellfish to gather; the relatively sheltered waters of the bay are great for all water sports.  On land there are bush walks and horse trekking over picturesque farmland; or check out the local artists and crafts people on Mercury Bay's Craft Trail.

Where to Wander.

GOLFING
For golfers there is an 18 hole course just outside Whitianga, and the Bob Charles designed 9 hole course at Matarangi on the beach.

BUFFALO BEACH

The H.M.S. Buffalo was wrecked in 1840 off Buffalo Beach while collecting kauri spars. Today the beach offers safe swimming, good fishing and shellfish collecting. Further north is Wharekaho Beach where the area's main Maori Pa was situated.

KUAOTUNU

This area was once a thriving gold mining town. These days it offers a good beach and fishing plus access via the famous "Black Jack Road" to the picturesque white sand beaches of Otama and Opito.

WHITIANGA WHARF

This is the centre for the boating and fishing activity of the town. From there, take the ferry to Ferry Landing and Flaxmill Bay and the minibus to Cooks Beach, Hahei and Hot Water Beach.

MERCURY BAY MUSEUM

Located in the old Dairy Factory, the museum contains fascinating relics from the area's past.

OTAMA BEACH / OPITO BAY

These undeveloped bays are ideal for swimming, picnicking and beach walks. The latter has a well preserved pa site, once the site of a large Maori population.

NEW CHUMS BEACH / OPERA POINT

Just north of Whangapoua beach, a pleasant 30 minute walk brings you to the secluded New Chums beach. Opera Point, just south of Whangapoua, preserves an ancient pa and a 19th century sawmill site.
