Thames.
Thames is the first stop on the main route from Auckland, Tauranga and Rotorua. Today many relics of the gold mining era remain and you can see a demonstration of ore being crushed and much more in Thames.

Where
in the world is Thames?

Thames, known as the 'Gateway to the Coromandel Peninsula', is the regions service centre, less than one and a half hours drive from the centre of Auckland.
It is the main shopping centre on the peninsula and has a wealth of boutique-style shops, an historic main street and the modern Goldfields Shopping Mall.
Thames in the late 19th century was one of New Zealand's largest towns, and in fact was even considered as a site for the capital, built on the pioneering industries of gold and Kauri logging. This colourful history is still alive in the pubs, buildings, museums and activities of the area. Fringing the town is the Thames estuary and dramatic volcanic hills of the Coromandel range and Kauaeranga Valley.
