Tramping & Walks.

WHENUAKITE / LYNCH STREAM
A 1-2 hour walk (one way) off the Tairua Hill road, takes visitors down to the coast
through regenerating Kauri forest. Around low tide a coastal route can be negotiated south
to Sailor's Grave, 1 hour further on.
SAILOR'S GRAVE
Sailor's Grave is accessible by foot or by car
(turning off the Tairua Hill Road). A short walk takes you to the grave of a sailor
drowned here in 1842.
TWIN KAURI SCENIC RESERVE
Recovering from the impact of goats, this bush reserve features a 30
minute walk and two prominent adolescent kauri right by the road.
BROKEN HILLS
At the top of the Puketui Valley Road, the Broken Hills area has gold mining relics,
fishing, rock hounding and a variety of day walks, including one through the 600 metre
"Collins Drive" tunnel.
ALDERMEN ISLANDS
Dramatic island peaks, remnant volcanoes, rise up off shore from Tairua. These are
protected conservation islands, free from rodents and other predators. A permit is
required to land. There is good diving around the Aldermens, Slipper and Shoe Islands,
(closer to shore).
