Fantastic coverage of what the peninsula has to offer. How about some detailed info on bush walking as there is much more to the peninsula than just the coastal fringe? Weather information (average temperatures, rainfall ...). I sincerely hope the exposure through this site doesn't result in the destruction, through tourism and people-pressure, of the very things that make the area unique.

Ban motorbikes 4 wheelers etc on beaches and keep it the way it is. The birds were here before us and deserve to be left to live the way they have always done. We loved the area and did a bit of surfcasting, birdwatching and walking. The place is just magic

Hello from Hawaii, I tried to find photos and info about the hot water beach that I have heard so much about. Somewhere north of Tairua I hear. I will visit in Oct. 2000. I will find it then I suppose. I hope! It has been since 1992 since we stayed in Whitianga and the Astral Motel. Very nice place indeed. The only thing I really miss in N.Z. is the warm water ocean of Hawaii. If I could spend a little time at the Hot Water Beach, I'd truly be in the best of both worlds. Aloha from Hawaii. Tom Beach

grandparents were married in Thames and had two

where the mining took them. It was really great to

I love the Coromandel especially Coromandel Town as
I always have because I go down there every year
for holidays at Christmastime from Auckland. My
Grandparents have lived there for about 25 years &
my Mum bought a house in Hauraki Road about 6 or7
years ago. It is what one would call a tradition of
mine to go down to Coromandel every year at Xmas to
visit my family & absorb some of the peace & quiet,
rest & relaxation that I don't really get in
Auckland.

Good site...but only one problem. Why don't you
include Hot Water Beach more? on the map etc..
Hot Water Beach is the most popular visited location
on the Coromandel.

We are very fortunate to have Kiwi friends who,
even more fortunately, have a batch in Whangamata
where we have spent many a short break escaping
England's cold and damp winters.
New Zealand is truly 'Godzone' country. There is no
better place to enjoy one's retirement.
Great web site that improves all the time.
Many thanks,

Beautiful Area fond memories from Australia
Why not add a family links-genealogy area, (make use
of rootsweb free pages)to your web site, I can add
some info to jump start, have a look at pearlspad
website, people can contribute what they have,ie
family stories, indexes, would help all, so many
NZers had family that spent time in the Thames
Coromandel area in the 1860's, very interesting to
look at Wises Directories.

I'm looking for any information on John Amatto.
John died 1900 aged 75 near Nowra NSW Australia.
Death record say he was born in Coromandel
Peninsula New Zealand. This would put time of his
birth around 1825. The name Amatto may have
changed slightly, as I do have an old 1844 document
with the surname name spelt "Amoottoo". There may
be decendents of John Amatto still in the
Coromandel area (or any where in the northern
island). If you have any information please contact
me. My email address; murraym@smartchat.net.au
