Your Complete
Guide to New Zealand's Beautiful Coromandel Peninsula
Kauri Grove & Lynch Stream

How to get here.
The car park and entrance are on State Highway 25 approx. 8
kilometres from Tairua and 2 kilometres north of the
lookout at the summit of the road.
Entering the bush at this point one can go on a pleasant walk or undertake a good tramp -
many species of native trees abound on both - sighting of fantails are common and the tui
and grey warblers can often be heard.
The Walk.
This is a loop track going off the main track to the coast
and takes approx. 1 1/2 to 2 hours to traverse - many native trees can be seen and it is a
delightful walk through regenerating bush. Plenty of young kauri trees can be viewed
together with tanekaha, rewarewa, matipo, miro, kanuka, nikau and punga, some of these
trees being disguised by epiphytes, orchids and ferns. The rata vine can also be seen.
Closer to the ground hooded orchids can be observed along with colourful lichens.
This loop track, though of camparatively short distance, passes through a considerable
variety of native vegetation set amongst clean bush streams.
The Tramp.
This follows a course through regenerating bush to the coast - taking a good 2 1/2 and 3 hours to reach the sea. One of the main features are two large kauri trees found a few metres off the track approx. 1 1/2 hours walk from the start. Their girth measurements are between 19 and 20 feet. Soon after sighting these trees the trach descends following the Lynch stream, crossing ot many times. On the way down there are excellent views of the ocean and glimpses of the off shore islands. The occasional large puriri tree can also be seen together with nikau palms and many other native trees. Once the coast is reached a 1 to 1 1/2 hour low tide walk takes the visitor through Otara Bay, on to Te Karo beach and finally to the site of the historic Sailor's Grave. It is suggested that transport meet one here for the return trip by road to State Highway 25 or the carpark at the start of track. Good footwear is recommended for this track, particularly as two rocky bays have to be negotiated. This route along the coast is only accessible 2 to 3 hours either side of low tide.
Whatever the type of walk you embark on, or the weather, take warm, dry clothing, a guide or map, wear sound footwear, and tell someone of your intentions.
