The Peninsula's largest virgin
kauri forest stands inland from Manaia - saved from logging by its remoteness, and more
recently, the conservation efforts of local artist Rei Harmon and others (access is by
permit only).
Boaters find that the spectacular Coromandel Harbour, with its many islands, offers a
sheltered playground, contrasting with the rougher, tidal waters off Cape Colville.
Just south of the cape lies the ecologically important Mt Moehau. It is significant in
Maori lore as the burial place of the great chief Tamatekapua (captain of the Arawa
canoe). Grouped around Moehau at several coastal points are Conservation Campsites for
those able to linger (longer) in the area.
Waiau Falls / 309 Kauris
The 309 Kauris are the finest, easily accessible stand of Kauri on the Peninsula. A
delightful 10 minute walk off the 309
Road (15 km east of Coromandel Township). The attractive Waiau Falls are 1 km further
west on the road (a 5 minute walk).
Castle Rock
Castle Rock is an old eroded volcanic plug. A 1-2 hour walk and reasonably steep scramble
off the 309 Road lead to its prominent summit and spectacular views.
Port Jackson / Fletchers Bay /
Cape Colville
These remote bays and headlands at the top of the Peninsula are approximately an hours or
so drive north of Colville along a narrow, unsealed road. There are 4 campsites in the
area (see margin).
Mt Moehau
Highest point on the Peninsula, important in Maori lore and legend, and a special
ecological area; Mt Moehau is a long, quite arduous day walk from either coast; suitable
for fitter, more experienced parties.
Coromandel Walkway / Mountain
Bike Trails
The longest coastal walk in the region. A three hour one way walk between Fletchers Bay
and Sandy Bay.
Long Bay / Papa Aroha
Two short coastal walks near Coromandel Township, both through regenerating native forest
ending at pleasant, sandy beaches.
Lucas Lookout
At the crest of Kennedy Bay Road, a 15 minute walk takes you to a high point with great
views of both coasts. On the other side of the road is the longer walk to Kaipawa Trig (40
minutes).
Waikawau
A sweeping, sandy undeveloped beach, safe for swimming, diving and fishing.
